Una cantaora perfecta

Cante: Mayte Martín. Guitarra: Pedro Sierra. Lugar: Sala Cajasol. Fecha: Jueves, 3 de marzo. Aforo: lleno.
Cante clásico, voz y guitarra. De compositores clásicos como Antonio Chacón en las granaínas, Pastora Pavón en las peteneras, Manuel Vallejo por fandangos, Joaquín el de la Paula, Merced la Serneta o Enrique el Mellizo en la soleá, El Pinini o Rafael el Tuerto por cantiñas. En las bulerías se acordó de Manolo Caracol, Manolito el de María y también de Concha Piquer y Machín.
Y, de propina, Manuel Molina en la música y Juan Manuel Flores en la letra, en homenaje al primero. Un cuento para mi niño que ejecutó en solitario, acompañándose a sí misma a la guitarra. Y todo desde el timbre prístino, tan característico, el fraseo claro, poderoso o sentimental, aunque más lo segundo que lo primero, y la dicción exacta. Es una cantaora que siempre me recuerda a la Niña de la Puebla. Por todos estos valores técnicos y también por la intimidad que consigue crear. Ella sola, o con la única compañía de Pedro Sierra, consigue llenar el escenario. También por la inteligencia con la que articula cada uno de los cantes que interpreta.
Mayte Martín sigue ostentando un puesto de primacía en esta faceta de lo jondo y de lo alto, la de la línea clara, que estuvo en los orígenes del flamenco y que fue dominante hasta la Guerra Civil española.
Pedro Sierra le ofreció un soporte portentoso, un colchón armónico infalible para este vibrante edificio musical. Con un toque tenso y seguro y se convirtió en el mismísimo Niño Ricardo, sólo que sin titubeos, en las frenéticas bulerías. Con falsetas luminosas y de sabroso pulgar.
En fin, que Mayte Martín, aunque lleva muchos años sin ofrecernos una nueva entrega discográfica de flamenco clásico, sigue siendo perfecta en esta faceta del cante.

Mayte Martín & Belén Maya perform "Guajira". Cantaora, guitarist and composer Mayte Martín (Barcelona, 1965) has often been called 'the best singer of her generation'. Her refined singing and her musical intuition have made her an icon of humanity. Even on her first album from 1994, 'Muy-Frágil', she showed that her greatest strength lies in her deepest vulnerability. Her singing is like her appearance: pure and unadorned.
Mayte Martín updates the classical flamenco repertoire with wonderful creativity. But she also excels at the styles in which Spain and South America are intertwined - the Idas y Vueltas. For many years, the genre was considered inferior, as 'not true flamenco', until Martín revived it and gave it a new allure.
With her boléro-like melodies to poems by Manuel Alcántara on her latest CD from 2009, the Catalonian singer pierced listeners to the heart. 'Martín made the audience float on her voice of silk and honey,' one critic wrote.
For many years, Martín and dancer Belén Maya were a fixed, passionate duo in Flamenco de Cámera. They will join forces once more specially for the Flamenco Biennial: two strong, beautiful women in a classical flamenco recital, in which old masters get a contemporary makeover.
