Once again I find myself at a crazy situation for seeing flamenco. As someone who became "hard core" with flamenco - I guess I need it from time to time. I hate to say that in this kind of tablao - the little shows at the studio of Mijal it was the first time I went to see it. Every while there is a little show of flamenco at the studio of Mijal Natan. Each time it's her who dance with two-three dancers from her company, each time there is a flamenco artist form Spain who's invited. Each time it's a one time show. This time with Mijal the dancers were Moran Ron (who's in the company for a long time) and Adi Grupper. The guests this time were Noa Drezner (guitar) and Alicia Carrasco (sinning) as a part of their tour and Maayan Doari on the cajon (looks like he's a part of this tour all the tour).
I came a bit after the doors has been opened. It took a little time. After I got in I knew the reason. Till the entrance - some old people who doesn't fit those things. One of them didn't stop to ask what is this place. Mijal made a practice outside near the door, a bit after the line. The problem was that their marketing person wasn't there. Yael Tuchfeld was sitting there to check who invited tickets, paid and which way. She needed to sign there on the list who really came and give the tickets. It was the first time she did it, so it took her some time. I didn't needed to say a thing. She already knows me and pulled out my tickets at the moment I said "Hi".
At the studio itself - at the start it didn't look so good. Half was empty, but some people already took the good seats. Some other girls from the company were there. With time the studio got fill almost till the end (only few seats lest empty). At the start I found out a chair I thought it's a good place as possible. I changed it. I looked up for the "balcony". The way the sofas there goes has changed for it will be possible to watch. Few people were sitting there. I had luck and there was a place. Few others came after me and the place there has finished. If not from the first or second row - that was the best place to watch the show. There was a little hand made stage there next to the wall in the front of the main door and the "balcony".
The show itself has started almost at time, only few minutes late. First part was a musical part without dancing. I'm not sure I recognized the palo. At the classes and workshops I didn't notice the acoustic thing there. Now I did and I think isn't too bad, but far from being good enough. It took me a little time to handle it.
Second part. Yael Tuchfeld took a box and set down on it next to Maayan. Adi Grupper got ready too next to stage. That was martineta. Yael was the palmera that part. Adi made a long solo with. A long beautiful martinete. I saw her till now as a part from a group, saw for the first time how does she really dance. She's really great. All of her dance looked so elegance. I noticed few steps and movements I started to learn recently from Mijal. I wondered if I will be able one day to make it so beautiful as the way she does it. I have a feeling I can only dream on. Yael got down from stage after the martinete has finished.
A short solea por buleria, only music and sinning.
Next - a solea. Noa and Maayen were playing, Alicia was sinning. Mijal came to stage and started to dance. It was a reminder for me why did I wish to start learning from her when I decide to learn from a new teacher. She was dancing beautiful. Still - things must happen. She had thee hairpins One of them has been thrown down on stage in the middle. Well, not all can do it, but she found an elegance way to take it and put it back in her hair. The solea moved to buleria. I can't be sure if it was planned or did she have a blackout. There was a moment she pulled time and stood there for a moment. Even if it wasn't planned - it made a dramatic moment.
After that - Alicia was talking (in Spanish of course) and thanked all the people. Not all I figured out from what she said cause I still need to improve my Spanish and she was talking fast. Noa was translating. The thank of us for coming, and the fact Alicia is here for the first time. She was surprised and happy to see that there are many people here who come to see flamenco and there are musicians and dancers here in such a (high) level. By the way - there are CD's of Alicia next to the door if anyone wants to buy. They take a brake and the show will go on in few more minutes. A woman next to me really thought it may finished...
Adi came up for a moment to take some water for herself. I couldn't help it and told her that I loved her part. I asked her if she will have another one. We never met before, but she already saw me on the web. After a moment she said she knows me. She asked if I'm Orna. I said I do. She felt like she need to apologize that she didn't recognize me at the first moment. She didn't have to. She asked if I enjoy it. Yes, a lot!
When the brake has finished - Yael got back to be a palmera. The next part was fandango de Huelva. At this part Moran Rona and Adi Grupper were dancing both. Most of time they made the same, but few steps and movements they made as a contrast one to another. Moran Ron is really good, there is no doubt, but I think that Adi Grupper made a little shadow on her. it looked more elegance to my eyes the way Adi was dancing. They both handled well the fact they didn't have much space and they both were dancing great.
Next part was only music again. Yael and Maayan started palmas. A moment after - they both stopped and looked at each other. Noa started with palmas. They got back to make the palmas. A moment after - Noa started to play. After a short while Maayan moved to play on his cajon. Alicia started to sing. Yael kept on the palmas. Alicia made some palmas as well from time to time. I'm sure that I have to be shame that I'm not sure about the palo.
Next part: tientos. Moran Ron changed her dress and danced the tientos herself. This time she could show how good she is without anyone will threat her. She is good, but someone was missing to me. I can't even tell what, but something was missing. I guess that I wasn't the only one who thought so. It's probably cruel of me to say it, but till the tientos there were many claps from the audience on each part. This time - the audience still clapped, but it was more in silence and more relax. A bit after she started to dance I noticed Yael has been changed. She wasn't on stage. Instead of her Ayelet Shachar (one more dancer from the company) was on stage as the palmera. Something has been thrown on stage again. After Alicia took it for it will be next to her chair I noticed what it was - one of the earrings of Moran.... But like nothing happened. That's one more elegance way to go on.
For the end - Ayelet also moved down from stage. No palmas. The musicians has started to play alegria. Mijal came to stage with another dress. She was dancing a lot. This time nothing thrown on stage accept flames. I guess that I don't really hate alegria, only when I dance it. Mijal made it amazing. The end looked to me un-human. It's too good for human will move this way.
Fin la fiesta. After telling who are the people who made the show this way (without the palmeras) Mijal asked people to come to stage if they want to for making fin la fiesta. Those who came - the palmeras (Yael and Ayelet) and one more from the company. The third one came barefoot and meant to make only palmas. The first one to dance was Ayelet. It was nice, but it looked like she's a bit afraid no one will handle it. She made it really small and polite, too small and polite for my opinion. Next was Yael. She made something short bt really nice. I liked it. The third from the company wanted to go on with the palmas, but after Mijal signed her again and again to dance - she danced. Funny how much those who want it the less looks like they make it free and with lots of pleasure. It was fun to see how did she dance. Alicia came to the middle. She was sinning a letra and started to dance. It was a bit long but it's better this way. She was dancing like she's a professional dancer and not the singer. She was really great. When she finished she received many claps from the audience. She looked embarrassed and started to laugh. Noa finished to play. Then Mijal demanded her dancing for fin la fiesta. She started to dance. Noa joined her with the guitar. One more happy moment (or at least it looked this way from the balcony).
After the show I couldn't help it. I didn't mean to buy anything on the way our or at the way back home. I changed my mind. Alicia is really good and although people here love flamenco - it's hard to find here flamenco CD's. I bought a copy before I went
