I wasn't sure I'll see anyone I know. There was few that I know, but most of them are fellows who I don't know well. Funny, but without to try - I set near couple of friends of my parents. They also love flamenco and I meet them many times in shows. This time - three of us sat together and till the show has started we were talking about which shows it's better to see soon and which good ones were recently. And he asked me about my learning.
Before it really started - someone from Suzanne Dellal was talking. He said he will made it short, but it wasn't too short. It was about this festival. He was talking in Hebrew and English (with a heavy Israeli accent) while it was harder with time to understand his English. He said that the ambassador is also there in the audience.
Show has started. For a start - on stage got in Jesús de Rosario the guitar player and Moy Natanzon (who no one told that he's gonna be there, but it's always a pleasure when he's on stage). Moy was playing in this part on a clay. It was a solea. After they started - Maria got into stage. She warmed her voice near a microphone which in the middle of stage with a chair. It wasn't enough. She came to the front of stage and started to sing. More light, also on the audience. I was shocked from her dress and not because it's beauty. But Maria made her start which quickly made me forget that her dress is ugly. Someone from back stage changed something about this microphone and the microphone next to the piano. Then it was easier to hear her. What a voice and which talent! After a while she went near the edge of stage, stopped twice to look deep into the eyes of the audience. Lights were on also also in the side of the audience, so it made it easyer for eye's contact. That's it! We have a diva who can "buy the audience" with a little stage trick and lots of talent. It was enough for me to know it's gonna be a great show. She sat down next to the piano and played a bit while she still sang.
After the solea she was talking in Hebrew. She said that she doesn't speak Hebrew well, but she kept on talking in Hebrew. In this part it was possible to hear it's hard for her, but she did it well. To stage came Irene Rodríguez. Next song was Maria's version to Como el Agua. Irene made the palmas and back voices. Moy moved to play on the cajon. It was a bit weird to hear this version, but it was still good. It has a happy sound. It's hard for me to tell in words how was it accept that, but became easier at the moment I understood that although it isn't the original version - it still has it's magic. Maria also played the piano all the sing which gave it a different style.
For the next song - Irene got down from stage. It was an alegria. Maria played a bit and came up to stand and sing. When I hear alegria from a singer like this and don't have to dance it - it sounds great.
Maria got back to the piano and left alone on the stage. She sang a song called Con el Tiempo. Just amazing. It's a beautiful song and even when it's only her and the piano - there is something about her which is hard to get down the eyes from her. Between songs she still was talking in Hebrew.
For the next song all musicians came back to stage. Three of them stood behind her and made palmas. a little light only on them. Accept it still sounds amazing because of the voice and talent - you have to see it for you could understand the dramatic impact it has. It had a very dramatic end. She stopped playing, stood up with lots of power and sand the last notes of the song. If I had the bravery to make there jaleo - I would probably make a roar for jaleo. It demanded a huge OLE! and I didn't dare to do it in this hall.
Maria got down from stage and Irene went after her. Jesús got back to his guitar and Moy to the cajon. They started to play a siguiryia. After a while Maria got back to stage with another dress. This time a red dress with a look which fit for a real star. She was walking near the chair in the middle and looked at the audience in a way which was clear she's in it. Then she stopped, held the chair and started to sing. Jesús and Moy stopped playing. Only her voice. Amazing to hear how much talent she has. The moment she was sinning this part could make it clear she's got a gift which all of us can enjoy it. Whoever wasn't sure if she's good - that was the time to see she's amazing. She signed with her hand and stomped with her leg. Music was on again. I love siguiryia! Pure flamenco which made one more hypnotist moment in the show.
Irene came back to stage. Next song tangos. Irene made back vocals and palmas again. Maria was walking from time to time on stage with the microphone in her hands. When she got closer to the edge - lights on the audience. She got back to middle of stage - the lights on the audience was off. At one point - Maria signed the audience that she wants the audience to make palmas. All made, after a while those who didn't understand the beat stopped. Me and some others who really in it still kept with it, but not to the end.
After that - Maria sat next to the piano again. She said in Hebrew that she invites a friend of her to sing. It's Pablo Rosenberg. One more guy that no one said he takes a part. Personally - I normally don't like him, but I guess that Maria takes out of him his best. He wasn't too bad this time. Before the next song - he was talking as well. He said he met her a month ago in the first time when he was in Madrid. He saw this beautiful woman. He and his friend thought that they must come and talk with her. Someone told them that they shouldn't cause her boyfriend was there next to her and he's a matador. A moment after they have been told that two weeks earlier this matador injured in a very sensitive part, so they did come to talk with her. Pablo said that he brought Maria to Israel this time (it's her second time, I have no idea how did I miss the other time). He asked her where is her boyfriend now. She said that he's in Madrid. Pablo said it's better this way.
They made two songs together. The second one is her latest hit. The name of it - they sang in Hebrew. And even that I normally don't like Pablo Rosenberg - even he made it well. And a bit freaked out on stage. He went down from stage. Irene was on the way out as well, but told something to Maria before. Maria told who are the musicians.
Last song was a buleria. A fun buleria as it suppose to be. And... oh dear, the time was running fast and the show was over. All got down from stage and all came back for bows. The audience loved it, NOT only me. All were clapping hands like crazy people.
Before the audience got relax - Maria started her version for fin la fiesta. She started to prepare her voice. Silence in the hall accept her voice. The way she used her voice and the face she made - it made a moment which looked like she's about to make something sad. Well, she didn't. It is fin la fiesta after all! She started to sing Hava Nagila. All started to laugh. It was a surprise. For me the biggest surprise was the fact I normally allergic to this song, but this time I couldn't stop smiling. In the way she sing it there is something charming. Few in the audience joined her. Few others around smiled like me and didn't join. Maria stopped sinning, but those who joined her in sinning couldn't stop. So she sang it a bit more.
Now it was really the end. The friend of my parents asked me to send "hi" to my parents when I'll see them. I stopped in my way back home to eat next to Suzanne Dellal.
